Scholastic Action Shooting Program
The WIWL Sponsors the SASP Program by allowing use of our ranges and providing seed funding.
This program is open to the Public, with participation limited by the number of volunteer Range Safety Officers available to ensure participant safety.
On June 26, 2018, eight members of the WIWL Blue Ridge Bullets SASP Team participated in the VA State Championship Match on the NRA Indoor Range in Fairfax VA. The squad of Alexander Baird, Maccoy Gilkinson, Talon Morris and Andrew Sullivan walked away with a third place finish and an all girls squad of Evie Blodgett, Emmie Blodgett, Gracie Blodgett and Amelia Lunceford took 4th place in the Team Open pistol against 5 other squads that have National All Scholastic Team Shooters and College age shooters on their squads.
Three of the Boy’s Squad decided to compete in the Rifle Shooting Match phase even though we do not offer that in our current WIWL SASP program. Talon Morris took 2nd Place in Individual Optic Rifle, Maccoy Gilkinson place 3rd in Individual Optic Rifle and Andrew Sullivan placed 3rd in Individual Rifle Iron Sights.
Col. Oliver North, the newly elected NRA President, personally welcomed the teams to the NRA Range and did a photo session with them as well.
Twelve Members of the Team are now shooting at the SASP National Competition in Marengo, Ohio, between July 14-21, 2018, against hundreds of young shooters from throughout the U.S. Both Talon Morris and Maccoy Gilkinson already have competed with scores making them eligible for the National All Scholastic Team in 2019. Outstanding shooting, guys!!!
Not bad for both the team and individual members in their first real SASP competitions—and a reminder that good shooting fundamentals in pistol easily transfer to rifle shooting.
The team will continue practicing on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 5:30 PM-7:30 PM. through the September. The WIWL R-P Range is closed to all but SASP Team members, Adult Volunteers and invited guests during these practices.
